Leading graduate recruiters such as Cancer Research, CEBR, KPMG and Betfair enjoyed insightful presentations from Karen Barnard, Head of UCL Careers, and Tim Daplyn, CEO of Red Brick Research. Plenty of discussion followed covering topics like getting graduates “work ready”, TEF, plus the ins and outs of degree apprenticeships and much more. I have summarised the two hour event into three takeaways that can make a real difference to your graduate recruitment in 2017.

1. “Work Ready” Graduates – Universities spending more resource in this area than ever before with exercises such as Careers Registration – tracking what careers students want to go into and what they end up doing. This means universities will really know how to target their students and help employers with certain requirements or challenges they face when attracting certain graduates. This not only means being self-aware (using psychometric testing) but how that plays out in team situations, negotiations, managing projects, running meetings and giving and receiving feedback. Key skills that really make graduates stand out and get noticed for the right reasons.

2. Widening Participation – Degree apprenticeships increase the options for 18+ year olds and can encourage low social equity groups to engage with HE where financial commitment is a major concern.

3. Diversity – Recruiting from a pool of graduate apprentices can help companies looking to address diversity challenges within their firm.
